Ten Thousand Villages
Ten Thousand Villages is one of the world’s largest fair trade organizations and a pioneer in selling fair trade goods to benefit disadvantaged artisans. A founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), Ten Thousand Villages was started in 1946 by Edna Ruth Byler who during her travels discovered beautiful goods that she brought home with her to sell (from the trunk of her car!). Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit whose sole purpose is to benefit the artisans it supports. Product sales help pay for food, education, healthcare and housing for artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed.
